New Delhi: A new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed to accelerate the translation of basic research in infectious diseases into practical clinical solutions for India.
The collaboration aims to bridge the gap between laboratory discoveries and real-world healthcare applications in infectious diseases, strengthening the country’s research and public health ecosystem.
The partnership has been established between the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) and YRGCARE, the operational arm of the YR Gaitonde Medical, Educational and Research Foundation.
Through this collaboration, both institutions aim to promote research on infectious diseases and address broader public health challenges relevant to India.

The agreement combines the multidisciplinary scientific expertise of JNCASR – an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DST) – with the decades-long clinical and research experience of YRGCARE in areas such as AIDS prevention, treatment, patient care, and clinical practice.
By bringing together academic research and clinical insights, the initiative seeks to accelerate progress in infectious diseases research and translate scientific discoveries into healthcare interventions.
A major component of the MoU is the establishment of the Suniti Solomon Research Laboratory at the JNCASR campus in Bengaluru.
The new laboratory will function as a collaborative hub for scientists and researchers working on infectious diseases and related public health issues.
The facility will enable interdisciplinary research projects and cohort-based studies while providing training opportunities for the next generation of scientists, students, and young researchers.
Through this initiative, researchers will gain direct exposure to real-world clinical challenges associated with infectious diseases, helping them design practical and scalable healthcare solutions.
The laboratory will also support collaborative work between academic researchers and clinical experts, enabling the translation of fundamental discoveries into medical applications.
Infectious Diseases Research: JNCASR to Provide Space and Institutional Support
Under the terms of the agreement, JNCASR will provide space and institutional support for the research activities, including access to its advanced scientific instrumentation, research facilities, and academic programmes.
YRGCARE, on the other hand, will establish and equip the laboratory while contributing its expertise in clinical research and cohort development to support collaborative projects focused on infectious diseases and public health.
Another significant element of the collaboration is the creation of the YRGCARE–Suniti Solomon Distinguished Faculty Fellowship at JNCASR.
Funded by YRGCARE for a five-year term, the fellowship will support the appointment of a new faculty member – preferably a woman scientist – who will lead a research laboratory at JNCASR while also contributing to the institute’s academic programmes.
The fellowship is expected to strengthen long-term research capacity in infectious diseases and promote leadership among emerging scientists.
The MoU will initially remain in effect for five years and reflects the shared commitment of both institutions to scientific excellence, ethical research practices, and innovation in public health.
Through joint research initiatives, academic collaborations, and resource sharing, the partnership aims to drive impactful discoveries in infectious diseases and enhance India’s research ecosystem for addressing pressing public health challenges.
